It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Bert on May 25, 2016. Loving husband of Valerie (nee Lucas). Predeceased by his parents Hendrikus and Cornelia and his brother Henk. Survived by 5 sisters and 2 brothers.
Bert was a jack of all trades. He worked for Voortman Cookies and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for many years. He was recently nominated for Senior Volunteer of the Year for the City of Hamilton.
Bert and his sense of humour will be missed by all who knew him.
As per Bert's wishes cremation has taken place.
A celebration of life will take place on Thursday, June 9, 2016 from 4 to 9 pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 222 Queenston Road, Hamilton. In lieu of flowers, donations to Habitat for Humanity would be appreciated.

Dear Val and Bert's (our) family. Words cannot express the deep loss that we feel for you at this time.
Our brother Bert will be sorely missed. His generous, frank, humorous nature shown to us over the years are precious memories for us now. His rooster crowing, jokes, making funnel cakes, and having time for our kids are all blessings we are going to miss. Our son Daniel also laughed at his antics, to Bert's delight as well! So many memories....
May God surround you with his love, comfort and peace now and in the future. As he suggested to dad, to be placed on mom's tomb stone that now God has wiped "every tear from their eyes. " Rev. 21:4 Because Jesus lives, we can make this profession of faith. "There will be no more crying or pain" Bert professed this as well to us. In this we find our comfort. With much love George and Diane Stroop and family.

Bert, my older brother was a pain to me growing up. He would tease me relentlessly and muss my (and my mother's hair) We did dishes together, fought and laughed together. In other words just like an older brother would. We sold flowers together when he was 13 and i was 10. Our first English words we learned were "would you like to buy some flowers, 35 cents a bunch".
My most recent precious memory is that of him playing with Daniel, our son with Down syndrome. Bert would put something on the table, and Daniel would move it. Daniel would giggle and rub his hands. Bert would laugh. This went on for quite a while. Bert told me that he didn't know that Daniel could laugh so much and he found such joy in this. He loved to tease and make kids laugh. I will miss him so much. His singing, even when he made up his own words. His boisterous nature. ...
