In Celebration of
Brian Peter Mascarin
Mascarin, Brian Peter
It is with the most profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Brian; husband, son, son-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, godfather, and friend on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, in his 65th year. Cherished husband of Lucy Mascarin, devoted son of Nora Mascarin. Predeceased by his loving father, Arido (Peter) Mascarin (2007). Dearest son-in-law of Tony and Josephine DiPaolo. Dear brother of Paul Mascarin (Sheila), Thomas Mascarin (Julie) and niece MaKayla. Dear brother-in-law to Paul and Rita Leonard. Adored uncle and godfather to Sabrina Sturge (Brandon), adored uncle to Jennie Paredes (Jorge) and adored godfather and uncle to Riane (Tom Sweeney), Jordan and Brooke Leonard. Deeply missed by his great-nieces and great-nephews, Emma and Jack Sturge, Keira and Kassandra Paredes, and Dylan Sweeney. Brian's love of basketball and baseball began at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Elementary School and continued at Cathedral Boys' High School. He had incredible mentors and teachers that guided him on his athletic and academic careers. It was these leadership qualities acquired at a young age that helped Brian battle, with much courage and determination, his most formidable opponent, cancer. He attended the University of Guelph where he played OUA basketball under the leadership of Garney Henley. He graduated from the University of Toronto OISE and began his teaching career at St Jean de Brebeuf Catholic Secondary School in 1978. Then in 1982, he moved on, to challenge the students and athletes at Bishop Philip Pocock Catholic Secondary School in Mississauga, until his retirement in June 2017. Brian loved coaching and was a beloved mentor and respected science teacher to many students, both on and off the court. "The challenge has been passed to your students and athletes, Brian. You have guided them well." Brian was a real foodie and connoisseur of fine wines. He loved to garden and would grow a fresh crop of tomatoes each summer. He would then coax Lucy into creating new recipes with the fresh bounty. Brian will also be missed by many close friends and colleagues at Bishop Philip Pocock Catholic Secondary School. Love and gratitude to them and the staff of St Jean de Brebeuf Catholic Secondary School. Sincerest gratitude to Dr. B.L. Di Paolo, Dr. T. Kouroukis and the staff at the Juravinski Cancer Centre and Joseph Brant Hospitals, the EMS team, Firefighters and Police Services for their care and concern for Brian. Love to our families for their continued love and support. Visitation will occur at Bay Gardens Funeral Home, 947 Rymal Road East, Hamilton, on Saturday, October 28th from 6:00-9:00 pm and Sunday, October 29th from 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00-9:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 30th at 10:00 am, at St Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church, 20 Idlewood Avenue, Hamilton. If desired, donations may be made to the Juravinski Cancer Centre or the Good Shepherd Centres. Please sign the online Book of Condolences at www.baygardens.ca.
