Dr. D.C. 'Skip' Robinson
November 19, 1932 - December 15, 2015
Obituary
Dr. Donald Clifford "Skip" Robinson

Having just celebrated his 83rd birthday in November, Skip passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, December 15, 2015, at The WillowGrove Long Term Care Facility. Beloved husband of Bettyjean (BJ) for 57 wonderful years. Much loved father and loving "Grampy" of Chris (Laura - Leah and Liam), David (Cindy - Ben and Sam), Nancy, and Sue (Doug - Rachel and Natalie). His kindness, patience, sense of humour, commitment to family, determination, and integrity have marked us all. Skip's life reflected his belief that "how you treat people matters". It was evident in the smile he offered everyone he met. Predeceased by his parents Cliff and Marcella Robinson of London (where he was born), and sisters Marcella (Brown), Marjorie (Bradshaw) and Wesley Robinson. Skip holds a special place in the hearts of his many cousins, nieces and nephews across Canada and the U.S.

After graduating from the University of Western Ontario (MEDS '57), internship and residency in London and Hamilton (FRCS(C) 1963; AMCOG), and a year at the Jessop Hospital for Women in Sheffield, England, Dr. Robinson delivered generations of Hamiltonians, first in practice at the McGregor Clinic, and then at McMaster University Clinic at Henderson General Hospital. He shared his knowledge and skill, as a much beloved Assistant Clinical Professor in Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University. He also served as president of the Canadian Gynecological Society and the Niagara Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Relaxation always included activity for Skip, an avid skier, accomplished sailor, tennis player, golfer, and home and cottage handy-man. The best vacation time was always together with family at the cottage. Strong family bonds and memories were created in this special place. A jazz enthusiast, Skip loved the smooth stylings of his piano favourites Oscar Peterson and Diana Krall. He was known to tinkle the ivories himself, and, after hours on call, we'd know Dad was finally home when we heard those familiar opening notes of "Misty" floating in from the living room piano. Skip was also a devoted Blue Jays fan. In recent years, routines were developed around game times during baseball season. Not much could put him in a bad mood, but a Jays losing streak dampened his spirits.

We cannot thank the staff of The WillowGrove enough for their warm and loving care over the last months. Many thanks to the Hamilton CCAC and the many PSW's who came to our home to assist in Skip's care.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that in memoriam donations be made to The Parkinson Society of Canada, Doctors Without Borders or St. John United Church.

Skip was, without doubt, one of the greatest OB/GYN specialists in the Hamilton community. On more than one occasion, he literally saved the day and lives of my patients and their babies. I admired and respected him not just as a colleague but as a human being, and I liked him tremendously. Judith and I extend our deepest sympathy to you all.

I consider Dr. Robinson a friend. He was a very special Dr. to me - delivering my 2 children and also my 2 grandchildren. He was very caring and very patient with me as a new mother. My condolences to his family at this time.

With great sadness, I read about Dr. Robinson's death. I'd heard that he'd been dealing with the challenges of Parkinson's. Now we can take comfort in knowing, that he is at peace.

Dr. Robinson delivered all three of my children, by C-section. He treated me with such kindness, good humour and great competency. Also, I called upon him twice for medical problems, that had nothing to do with his Ob-Gyn speciality. I was frustrated with the system and both times he sent me to doctors who were able to provide the help needed. I had such strong faith in his abilities and his care for his patients. Dr. Robinson and nurse, Monica were a truly great team!

It is hard to say good bye to a loved one at any time, but somehow near Christmas it seems more poignant. May the memories of this wonderful man sustain his family. May the true meaning of Christmas...peace, hope and love, be with you all, at this difficult time.

My sincere condolences to you B.J. and your entire family. I have so many lovely memories from my McMaster Clinic days. He was such a gentle, kind and caring person. His family was undoubtedly the light of his life. He genuinely cared about each and every patient in his care. I am so sorry for your loss. He will truly be missed.
