Born in Milton, Ontario Nov 15, 1970, Scott passed away May 2,2025 at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. Scott Moir was the beloved son of Lindsay (1946–2012) and Elizabeth Moir, devoted husband to Julie Cluff, and proud father to Callum and Chloe—roles he held closest to his heart. He was a loving brother to Andrew Moir and Heather Wacyk, and cherished brother-in-law to Ward Cluff, Anne Budzynski, Mark Wacyk, Adrienne Szasz, Jody Zafirides and Greg Zafirides. To Murray and Susan Cluff, he was like a second son. Scott was also an uncle to many nieces and nephews, all of whom he adored deeply.
He was a man of kindness, curiosity, and unwavering connection. Scott had a rare gift for making those around him feel seen and celebrated. If you were lucky enough to be in his orbit, you knew there was no one more genuinely thrilled by your achievements, no matter how big or small. His love for his family and friends was boundless, and he showed it in a thousand quiet ways.
Scott grew up in London, Ontario, and attended A.B. Lucas Secondary School, where he played both football and basketball. He went on to join the football team at Wilfrid Laurier University, earning his BA, and later completed a master’s degree at McMaster University. His academic journey culminated in a PhD in Scottish History at the University of Guelph, with part of his research taking him to the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Scott pursued a life in education—driven by the same passion to make history come alive and to spark that same passion in young minds. He became an Associate Professor of History at Cape Breton University, where he found not only meaningful work but a second home. The faculty welcomed him with warmth, and he embraced his students and colleagues with the same generosity of spirit he gave to all areas of his life. Even after falling ill, Scott remained committed to his teaching, his students, and to the university he loved.
Scott called two places home: Ontario and Cape Breton Island. His heart belonged to both, and he journeyed across Canada multiple times a year to stay connected with each. Summers and holidays were devoted to those he cherished most—Callum and Chloe. He made it a priority to be present for every school event in May and June, anchoring the home with his steady presence from spring through early fall. December held a special place in his heart, filled with joyful family celebrations he deeply loved.
Scott’s passing leaves a profound void in our lives. We will miss him in a million quiet moments—in the sound of laughter, a clever turn of phrase, the warmth of a shared memory. His passion, quick wit, and deep love for life were woven into the fabric of our days, and their absence is deeply felt. Yet even in our sorrow, we are grateful. Grateful for the memories that bring him back to us, and for the love he gave so freely. We know that Scott would want us to stay connected, to lift each other up, to laugh, and to share stories that keep his spirit alive. In remembering him, we honour the joy he brought into our lives.
Many thanks to the staff at Mount Sinai, Princess Margaret, Cape Breton Regional Hospital and Markham-Stouffville hospital. Special thanks to the Ceresne family, who are like our own.
Family asks that donations be made to the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation.
