In Celebration of

Shirley Ann Mattina

MATTINA, Shirley Ann (1934-2017)

It is with heartbreak and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Ann Mattina (nee Collyer) on September 12, 2017, in her 84th year of life. Shirley passed away with her family by her side. She will be mourned by husband Sam Mattina, who loses a companion of 60 Years. Her memory will be cherished by sons Charles Martin Mattina and Sam Douglas Mattina and her daughter-in-law Divina Mendoza. Her grandchildren Michael and Jeffrey have wonderful memories to embrace and will miss her delightful sense of humour. She is predeceased by her parents Henry James Collyer and Hilda Collyer (nee Currie). Shirley was born and raised in Hamilton, and will be fondly remembered by all family and friends whom she met in life as a wonderful, open hearted, kind and generous soul. She had a keen eye and wit, and a love of painting and decoration which were readily put to good use, leaving many beautiful mementos of her time with us. If ever there beat a heart to match that of the world’s ideal, hers was it. Friends will be received at a memorial visitation on Friday, September 22, 2017 from 6-9 pm, at Bay Garden Funeral Homes, 947 Rymal Rd E, Hamilton (905) 574-0405. A memorial Mass to celebrate Shirley’s life will be held at 11 am on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Most Blessed Sacrament Parish Roman Catholic Church (305 E. 37th St., Hamilton). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Kidney Foundation of Canada, Canadian Diabetes Association, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Cremation has taken place. Please sign the online Book of Condolences at www.baygardens.ca.

Dear Sam and Divina,

My sincere condolences for the loss of your beloved mother. May you take comfort with the many wonderful memories of her.

Please allow me to share this Baha'i prayer with you -

O my God, O Forgiver of sins and Dispeller of afflictions! O Thou Who art pardoning and merciful! I raise my suppliant hands to Thee, tearfully beseeching the court of Thy divine Essence to forgive, through Thy mercy and pardon, Thy handmaiden who hath ascended unto the seat of truth. Cause her, O Lord, to be overshadowed by the clouds of Thy bounty and favor, immerse her in the ocean of Thy forgiveness and clemency, and enable her to enter the sanctified abode, Thy heavenly Paradise.

Thou art, verily, the Mighty, the Compassionate, the Generous, the Merciful.

Sincerely,

Tara

My mom created a world of magic and fun for me and my brother growing up. She would actively play games with us, and always was there to offer support and encouragement no matter the trouble at hand. She was funny, kind, and generous.
