It is with sorrowful hearts we share the peaceful passing of our beloved husband and father, Anastasios (Stan) Tsakos, on March 9th, 2026, at the age of 86, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Mary, his children Sofia (Ali), Thelma (Steve) and Thomas, his cherished grandchildren Anastasia, Gerry, Nikolas, Matthew and Andrew, his sister Maria and his brother-in-law Greg (Aliki). He is predeceased by his father Thomas, mother Thomai, father-in-law Theodor, mother-in-law Sofia, sister Ourania, brother-in-law George and sister-in-law Agapi. He will be greatly missed by his many cousins, Koumbaroi, nieces, nephews, and friends. Stan had struggled with a slow decline related to vascular dementia for several years that eventually led to his passing. He would not however, want to be remembered by how he passed but by how he lived. Stan was born in Tihio, Kastoria, Greece. He was a proud immigrant and loved to tell the story of how he came to Canada in the late 1960’s with just a few clothes and a suit given to him by his uncle Zisos, to whom he was forever indebted. He soon thereafter met his beautiful wife Mary and embarked on a 58 year journey of marriage and partnership. Stan considered himself a good example of how working hard, saving your money and investing wisely can give you a good life in Canada. His children and grandchildren were his world and so for them he added a fourth requirement, "education, education, education". When he arrived in Canada he immediately found odd jobs through his network of other Greek immigrants until he found work in his trade as a welder at National Steel Car in Hamilton, Ontario where he quickly moved up the ranks to Forman. Intelligent, self-reliant, and resilient, after 15 years, Stan decided he wanted to work for himself and together with his wife eventually owned and operated their own family restaurant where he spent the rest of his working career. “Stan’s Place” for him was his happy place. There he connected with the good working-class people that would visit daily from the nearby factory, and had loads of laughs with the teenagers from the high school across the street that spent too much time in his restaurant instead of in school and whom he ordered back to class. Stan’s Place was also the place where he would gather his large family for too much food, drink and dance, sometimes even with the live Greek band of his nephew Kosta. Those are the moments that mattered for him. He was deeply devoted to his wife and children, reveled at being a grandfather, and his heart was open to his family and friends. All he wanted was to be surrounded by people. His wish was granted, with the love of his wife Mary by his side always, his children and grandchildren always making a point of visiting and those special coffee times in retirement with his close family and lifelong friends. He had a blessed life.
May God rest his soul until the life ever after. His memory will be eternal. We love you always & forever.
A heartfelt thank you to the staff at Macassa Lodge Long-Term Care Division for their compassion and support during the last most difficult months where they assumed our beloved husband and father’s care.
