A new star shines brightly above though many will see it with heavy hearts. A chronic respiratory illness claimed our Liz (nee Naczynski) on February 5. A lifelong Hamiltonian, she was a loving mother to Jeremy (Jessica) and John-Paul (Tania) and devotedly indulgent grandmother/Babci to Tenebre, Ianto, Elunia and Julliet. Also remembering her are sisters Jane and Julie Naczynski. Predeceased by her high-school sweetheart and husband of 41 years, Charlie (2016) and parents Mary and Joseph.
After completing a bachelor's degree in art history at McMaster and teacher certification, Liz fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a teacher, and taught almost her entire career at Bishop Ryan Secondary School, the same high school she graduated from and where she met Charlie. An unusual note: Due to her long career, she taught at all three locations of the school. She felt a special bond with many of her students and was a supportive and empathetic mentor; as a drama teacher she oversaw seven musical productions.
Liz was a soprano for the Diocesan Choir and a dedicated founding member of the choir at St. Catherine of Siena (and previously at St. Margaret Mary). She was an avid reader and book club devotee. She travelled as far afield as Poland, Hawai'i and the Galapagos; Italy was a favourite destination.
A knowledgeable, hands-on gardener, Liz's front yard was a showstopper and garnered years' worth of municipal Trillium Awards; she also encouraged other gardeners to excel by volunteering as a Trillium Awards judge.
A generous and caring friend, her outgoing and warm personality meant she had deep friendships and was 'fairy godmother' to many young people.
We would like to thank Janet and Peter Darby for their loving support during Liz's illness, and Dr. Parveen Wasi for her attentive care over the years.
