Franco Gorgonio was born on October 8, 1938, in the Gorgonio family home in Santa Bona Nuova, Treviso, Italy. In the years following World War II, his family relocated to Torino before immigrating to Canada when Franco was ten years old. They settled in Niagara Falls, Ontario, in the Glenview community, known locally as Silver Town, where he grew up surrounded by extended family and a strong sense of connection and belonging.
Franco attended St.Patrick’s Catholic Elementary School and later Niagara Falls Collegiate and Vocational Institute (NFCVI), where his natural artistic talent began to flourish. As a dedicated art student, he contributed as a lead artist to a large mural titled From Sea to Sea, a piece that celebrated the uniqueness of each Canadian province and remained proudly displayed in the school for many years. He went on to further his artistic education at Central Technical School in Toronto, known for its prestigious art program.
Following his studies, Franco began his career with L’Oréal, creating advertising layouts for magazines and product campaigns. He later built a long and steady career working at Petro Canada’s Plant Two. While his role required precision and focus, Franco brought warmth into every space he occupied, often cooking for coworkers, sharing meals, and creating moments of connection through food.
Franco was a man who embraced life fully. He had a deep love for travel, particularly his time spent in Cuba, where he immersed himself in the culture, built meaningful connections, learned Spanish, and developed a love for salsa dancing. He was a part of the Opera Hamilton Guild. He found peace in fishing trips, whether up north or out deep sea fishing, and he enjoyed quiet moments at home bird watching in his backyard with a cigar in his hand.
A gifted and devoted artist, Franco found joy in painting, especially landscapes. He took great pride in his creative work, including the serigraphs he created for Opera Hamilton. His love of art was a defining part of who he was, an expression of how he saw and appreciated the world. He was equally drawn to history, music, and conversation. Franco stayed informed, enjoyed discussing current events, and valued meaningful dialogue. He also had a well known love of food, cooking, hosting, and bringing people together around the table. Whether preparing a meal or tending to his tomato garden, he found happiness in sharing and creating.
In his final year at St. Joseph’s Villa, Franco continued to share his gifts with those around him. He taught art classes, inspiring others with his creativity, and spent time tending to vegetables in the community garden, still nurturing growth, beauty, and connection in the ways that came so naturally to him. The staff supported him with genuine care and enthusiasm, encouraging his determination to walk and celebrating his artistic spirit every step of the way. Above all, Franco’s greatest pride and joy was his family.
He was the beloved father of John Paul (Larissa) and Lisa (Peter), and a devoted Nonno to Alexandra (Joshua), Jessica, Spencer (Peyton), Vittoria, and Julia. He was also a proud great grandfather to Nico. Franco is survived by his brother Joe Gorgonio and is remembered with respect and care by his former spouse, Mary Gorgonio.
Franco will be remembered as a man who lived with heart, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for life. He found beauty in the everyday, valued connection above all else, and left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
His legacy lives on in his art, in the meals shared with loved ones, in the stories passed down, and in the deep love he had for his family.
He will be deeply missed.
