Obituary
Hill, Gary Palmer
June 12, 1937 - May 27, 2016

It is with strength in our hearts that the family announces his passing from our love and care. Left to go on without him is his caring wife, his best friend of 59 years Arlene (McNaughton). Proud father of his three children, Shelly (Jim Rose), Richard (Debra) and Julie Anne. Papa/Pops of his loved grandchildren, Jessica Lynne (Jordan), Jenni Lee, Bradley Emerson and Evan Christopher. Survived by his mother, Mae (in her 102nd year), sisters, Bette (Gerry), Sharon (Doug), brother in law, Bill (Judi), nieces, nephews and his favourite aunt, Shirley and Earl. Reunited with his father, Francis Emerson (Frank Hill) and his sister, Joyce (Bob). Gary leaves a strong legacy of the lessons he taught us all. A passion for nature (the great outdoors), the southern sun (enjoying his Florida home) and fortunately early retirement in his fiftys and a handyman supreme. Gary, also enjoyed many sports, golf, fishing at the cottage as well as coaching and playing baseball. He also liked daily walks with his springer spaniels. Gary was a well-respected commercial and industrial electrical contractor in the Hamilton and Burlington area. He was one of a kind and will be missed by all. A life well lived and he did it his way. A private family farewell was held at BAY GARDENS FUNERAL HOME (905-527-0405) and was laid to rest at our family plot in Greenwood Cemetery, Burlington. Gary has gone to his eternal home to hike with his springer spaniels.

Our deepest condolences Arlene and family in your loss. Remember you guys when you lived in Carlisle. We lived beside Bill and Judy. Always enjoyed talking with Gary.

Those we love don't go away,
They walk with us everyday,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear.

So sorry to hear of your loss.
Arlene, you have been in my thoughts.

Sorry to hear about Gary, never met the man, knew he was family, heard of him, my Dad was Franks brother, Homer / Jim.

I knew Francis well and his little sail boat, as my Dad would go out to see him in Selkirk, that was it, everyone disappeared, after Francis passed.

We didn't know Gary but Julie, his daughter, has been cutting our hair over 20 years. We know how much he suffered and now he is at peace. Julie has talked of her Dad so we knew about him. Now he is at rest.

Gary was a man with extraordinary HANDS; That EMBRACED his wife, his children and most especially his Grandchildren.
He could FIX anything with his hands, he could BUILD things with his hands, a House, a Cottage from scratch, on a Island with no power tools! He PLANTED trees and Gardens, made Fish ponds, with his Hands,

TREES, he was obsessed with Trees, planted them and nurtured them on every Property he owned. Planted them in honour of his Grandchildren's birth. He would be so proud to know that Brad, his 3rd grandchild has the same Love, and now works in this field.

HOMES, he took such pride in all his homes, not a weed would ever be found on the grounds, he was maticulus. Gary and Arlene moved so much, simply because, Gary would finish all that could be done in one home, and would have to move on to find another project !

ANIMALS, No surprise to anyone here, that Gary had such a love for Animals, from his first Springer Spaniel - TOBY, when he was a young boy, to the Labs, Springers and even a miniature poodle he had throughout his entire Family Life.
We had Ducks, Pheasants, Chickens, a Horse a Pony, The chickens came from Mountsberg, where Gary, such a Honest Man, STOLE, 2 tiny chicks and put them into his pocket. Didn't reveal his theft, until we were all in the car, on our drive back home !!! Henry and Henreitta, provided the family with fresh eggs for many years...
He passed on this love of animals, to all of us, especially Shelly, who has been in the Veterinary profession for 23 years and his Granddaughter Jenni who has been in the same field for 10. Bradley's favorite sentence was "Keep Animals Cozy" which was taught to him by his Papa!

OUTDOORS,
You would never see Gary, INDOORS, maybe on a Sunday afternoon IF there was a Golf game, or a Car Race on TV.
Never, ever you'd you see him lie down on a couch to relax. "There is Always Something to be Done" he would say.
He loved the Outdoors; Nature of every kind, Hiking, Fishing, Canoeing, Boating, Tobogganing, Snowmobiling. And in the summer, on the weekends, if he was to relax (after all the chores would be done) he would enjoy his Pool and on the days he had "company" his family or the grandchildren, he would be the biggest kid in the Pool. Even to the point when Brad was little he would stand at the side of the pool, wave his little finger, and say "No Foolin Papa ok ?"

TRAVEL,
Gary was able to take his young Family to Florida, including Disney World almost every year, getting in the car in the very early morning and driving for 3 days... "Stop fighting kids and LOOK OUT THE WINDOW, tha'ts where you'll learn things" we would stop along the way at many places, where there were many memories made, He took them on a week long adventure in a Camper Truck, there were many day trips, also travelling to the Family cottage, he always said "He could teach his kids more out of school, than they could teach him in school" !
Disney...
He LOVED Disney World, most of the Grandchildren were very fortunate to have been able to go to Florida with Gary and Arlene (individually on their own) I think it was an excuse for him to go to the Park to be a kid again. He was at the head of the line before anyone else, even giddy. This was a bond that each child would never forget, That is priceless

Gary was a Hard worker, a Great provider, a very Proud man, and Most of all even though he wasn't always an easy man to please, as, Gary was ALWAYS RIGHT, STUBBORN in his ways, and a PERFECTIONIST, He was Very Respected, by his Family and all that knew him.

May he rest Peacefully and free of a body, that failed him...

We Love you More than you know, and will miss you Deeply,
You have left Us with So Much to Remember and be Grateful For

Grandchildren, Gary would make an Adventure of everything... from making it possible for the grandchildren to use his workshop to build things, making them stilts out of wood scraps, would even pile them on a sled with the dogs. He gave them opportunities that a lot of grandkids didn't have.
He was always curious, whether it was looking for the biggest seashell in Fort De Soto or finding abandoned birds nests or beehives for the kids to take to show and tell. He'd open up Milkweeds just to show them whats inside.
He'd even make work fun for them, gathering Walnuts from the front yard in Carlisle and following them with the wheelbarrow or tractor. Always the teacher....
