Obituary
Luciani, George

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of George Luciani on June 4, 2016 in his 70th year. He is now reunited with his father Giuseppe and his mother Eva. George was dearly loved by all his family; Josie and (the late Anthony) Rizzuto, Rosalie and Frank Carpino, Angela and Erika Ecklund, Anthony (Nadia), Anthony Jr. and Marcus Rizzuto, Gail (Jeff), Miranda, Kyla, and Jaden Dowling, Ross (Sam) and Kiana Carpino, and Andrea (Emidio), John Paul and Joey Santroni. He will also be greatly missed by his relatives in Italy, Zia Vitalina and cousins, Rita Petrini, and the Curzi and Postacchini families, his former colleagues at HWCDSB, members of the basketball community and many friends. George was a retired Vice Principal with his longest term at St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School. He was actively involved in basketball as a successful coach at STM and was also the founder of the Father Kennedy Memorial All-Catholic Junior Boys' Basketball Tournament which he convened for 39 years. He will be remembered for his dedication and love of Catholic Education and will forever be missed by his family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Marydale Park or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.

Did not know George but all of my friends speak highly of him. He was loved by his friends at St. Jeromes and therefore as student at St. Jeromes and wish him godspeed in his new journey. Rest in peace my friend.

Thanks for the genuine and sincere friendship while we were roommates at St. Jerome's College Residence. They were some of the best years of my life. And after that, I think you for the continued good times as the years passed us by. May you rest in peace, my friend!
PS: Don't give our Father to many hassles; after all, He is the Head Coach in His house!

So sad to hear of George's passing. A great man with a great passion for his work and the kids. Basketball in Hamilton owes a great debt to him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time. Now George, you can raise a glass with Jimmy V and talk about 1983! Lots of love and memories. The Poole Family; John, Nancy, Hudson and Adam.

As cousins, I have so many wonderful memories of George growing up being together at my Grandparents' home. Most Sunday's were spent together. He was truly a wonderful person that will be greatly missed. The past few years we kept in touch a great deal through email. He always expressed such a joy being with his closest family for festive occasions and spending time with good friends. I just can't believe he is gone. A few days before he passed away I received an email from George. He was so happy that the good weather had finally arrived and that he had the swimming pool ready for the summer. May you rest in peace and join your wonderful parents in heaven. Love, Lorraine Barbisan (Silenzi)

I met George in my second year at the University of Waterloo when I decided to reside at St. Jerome's College Residence. He took me in and was my mentor and confidante. We celebrated life at the residence one year when we decided to dress him up as a Bishop. His specs were down on his nose as he glanced with mischievous eyes to those he chose to "bless" with his shaker of salt. As his 'altar boys', bearing candles, we would bless many a car or person as they parted for the summer. George too faced his "blessing" one year when buckets of water came down on him from the second storey of St. Jerome's residence as he was performing his ceremony. You could recognize his shouting, raspy voice across campus. He sounded to me like Larry of the Three Stooges - but with an added rasp, an Italian accent at times and both arms flailing.
He was a Warrior fan like no other. We often travelled on the team bus, one trip being notable. Zito ("Z"), George and I travelled to Windsor one year. From the Lancer game, we decided to take in a Detroit Piston Game. As we were walking down the sidewalk in the " 'hood", George cautioned us to "give way and not turn around" when a line of "boys of the 'hood" walked by. Did I listen to George? Nope. I walked right through that line of guys and looked back at them. I noticed they turned around and started following us. George blasted me in his usual way, screamed his "George scream", looked for the nearest alley to the Detroit riverfront and to the police, and took off - so to speak. If you can imagine his waddle run - he became the "sprinter of the year" as he scurried to safety. Needless to say, Z and I beat him to safety. Then we all laughed with George's "belly laugh" as he slapped me and shouted "whadya doin'?" What a treat it was to kid, laugh and join in the fun with "Looch". Thanks for the memories of which there are many more, George! Let's do it again - another place, another time, another laugh!

About George,

Two generations of the lives of Beltranos of my immediate family and and many other Beltranos families through the years have benefited from George Luciani being a leader, mentor, friend, my teacher, and Vice Principle at Saint Thomas More (STM).

I was at STM in the 70's, my sister the 80's and for my boys and nephews late 90's and 2000's. He helped me, my friends, boys - all of us students - by his exemplary example, his happy perspective, the confident tranquil steady strive to bring out the best in all of us. I don;t recall ever any of us ever complaining about fairness or unjust anything. He applied himself, shared and expressed his formidable values, standards and so many christian attributes in a very wonderful way!!

He was a just a great and honorable man who help us parents parent and see our kids grow up with great Christian and family values through all of his efforts at STM!! He truly influenced me both subtly and directly. it has come to affect my decisions, values, who I am values as an individual and as a parent and those I surround myself with.

He also had a great positive influence on my sons, nephews, cousins and family - we all went to STM. He never turned his back to our needs as people or students!!

George Luciani was a wonderful person, a great and honorable man.
He is remembered and will be in our thoughts and hearts!!

Hi,

My name is Francis Verminski and I am from Rome,N.Y. 50 miles east of Syracuse. I met George in August 1967 at Resurrection College. I was a young naive and impressionable young man. Kitchener is the farthest I traveled and the first time I traveled outside of the U.S.A. You can imagine how overwhelmed and scared I was. Lo and behold I met George. My first impression was he had the
personality of Friar Tuck and the intelligence of Thomas Aquanis. He had one of the most magical
smiles and wonderful hugs. I know without his support and friendship I would have never made it through
my first year or graduated from the University of Waterloo. I miss you George. May you rest in peace
and looking forward to seeing your smile and feel your hug.

Rest in Peace,

Francis

Carissimo Giorgio
