Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Harry on March 9, 2019. Predeceased by his beloved wife Marilyn just 26 days ago, his son Daniel, brother Ronald and his parents Vern and Dorothy Howell. Cherished dad to Cheryl and dearly loved Papa to Stephen Townson (Lindsay) and Natalie Pauls (Joshua). Fun loving Papa Harry to Julia and Nicolas Pauls. Dear brother to Jane O’Connor (Jim) and brother-in-law to Ruth Howell.
Harry had a long and accomplished career in the National Hockey League, but his true love was his family . We had a family cottage filled with so many memories, especially Trivial Pursuit marathons, card games, cribbage and scrabble. Harry was an avid reader especially history books and never missed a Sunday morning crossword puzzle. Harry left Hamilton at 16 to play junior hockey in Guelph. He made many friends there and several were teammates for many years. When Harry’s playing career ended, he and Marilyn moved back to their hometown of Hamilton. They were often seen walking arm in arm downtown going to the market or the Hamilton Bulldogs games Thank you to Willow Grove LTC for the wonderful care and compassion you have given Harry for the past 3 years.
Visitation will be held at Bay Gardens Funeral Home, 947 Rymal Road E. Hamilton on Friday, March 22, 2019 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. A Celebration of Harry’s Life will be held in the ‘William J. Markey Chapel,’ Bay Gardens Funeral Home, Hamilton on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 1pm. A private family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to the Hamilton Bulldogs Foundation Harry Howell Scholarship, bulldogsfoundation.com. Online condolences may be shared at www.baygardens.ca

Our deepest condolences to Cheryl and Family on the passing of your Mother and Father. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of grief.
I have fond memories of Harry from when I was a youngster on Buchanan Street. Not only because he was a star player in the NHL but also because he always had time (during the off-season) to spend with the kids in the neighbourhood...playing baseball, throwing a football around or hitting golf balls in the yard of Queensdale PS. I remember he once drove a ball across the whole yard and through a kitchen window of a house across Inverness Ave. Rod Miller, Harry and myself all took off running for home! But I'm sure that he later confessed to the owners! He was a true gentle man.
This beautiful picture is from December of 1977 and was likely the last time I saw you parents. It was taken at the Miller's house in Burlington.
Take care. An old friend and neighbour, Bill Vogl |

It is with much sadness to learn of the passing of Harry as well as Marilyn. My condolences to Cheryl and family.
So many thoughts cross my mind as I write this. My parents Eleanor and Bruce Miller along with my brother Rod , lived across the street from the Howells on Hamilton mountain for many years
When hockey season was drawing near , Harry and Marilyn would back up with Danny & Cheryl and leave the neighbourhood for New York and another hockey season . Mom and Dad were always sad to see them go as my brother and I were also . However , we looked forward to watching“ Hockey Night In Canada” especially when the Rangers were playing the Leafs. No matter what else Mom & Dad may have had planned , there was nothing more important than watching Harry and his teammates take on the Leafs.
We were always ecstatic when our Rangers beat them !!! Maybe not as often as we would have liked.
Harry had made a promise to me that during every game played in Toronto that during his first shift on the ice, he would tap his stick on the ice to say hello ........ a promise he never ever broke . I was maybe 12 when this promise was first made to me. I am now 71 years young and have been a lifelong Rangers fan !
When I was a bit older I became the babysitter for Danny & Cheryl when Marilyn & Harry would go out for the evening. I quest they trusted me with the kids.
My dear father was my hero who I always looked up to . As a young boy I was most fortunate to have had a second hero - Harry Howell . May you Rest In Peace . I know you are now reunited with Marilyn , Danny , brother Ron and parents.
God Bless.
Dave Miller

| My deepest condolences to Harry's survivors. I met him and his family when we were at the same High School in Hamilton - Westdale and remember many wonderful times at Friday night 'canteens' and hockey games when he was with the Biltmores. My thoughts are with his daughter, his grand-children and his sister, Jane and her family. |
