In Celebration of

John Miszuk

April 29, 1940 -  July 28, 2025

On July 28th, 2025, at the age of 85, John Miszuk passed away peacefully while at home surrounded by family. He will be forever missed by his beloved wife, Cora, having enjoyed 63 years of marriage. John was cherished by his children and their spouses, Kathleen, Tom (Lisa Bianco), Mary (Jerry Wilson), and John Paul (Susie Pacheco). John was also a loving grandfather to Steven and his wife Christine, Nicholas, Anthony, Hailey and Morgan – and a proud great-grandfather to Meganne, Malia, and Stanley. John was predeceased by his parents Maria and Kasimierz Miszuk and is survived by his siblings, Stella Nizielski and Hedy Miszuk.

As a child in Naliboki, Poland, John and his family suffered displacement during WWII, eventually emigrating to Hamilton in 1951. After arriving in Canada, John developed a passion for hockey, skating every day as a young boy, no matter the weather. Eventually he became a superb defenseman, rising through the ranks of Junior Hockey to be drafted by the Detroit Redwings of the NHL in 1963. John also played for the Chicago Blackhawks, the Philadelphia Flyers, and the Minnesota North Stars. His professional hockey career lasted 16 years. After retiring from hockey, John and his wife Cora became one of the original Tim Horton franchisees, operating several stores for almost 40 years.

John was an avid and accomplished athlete who also enjoyed playing golf with family and friends. After retiring, he played in the NHL Old Timers league, raising funds for various charitable organizations.

A heartfelt thank you to the Cardio Unit staff at Hamilton General Hospital for all their dedication and care, as well as to Dr. Patrick Magloire for his attentive and comforting care during these last years. And special thanks to Father David Wilhelm of the Holy Rosary Parish for his prayers during John’s stay in the hospital.

John will be held dear in the hearts of his family, relatives and friends. His family are truly grateful for all the love and support received during this difficult time.

Donations in memory of John may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

A visitation will be held on Friday August 1, 2025, at the Bay Gardens Funeral Home, 947 Rymal Road East, Hamilton, from 4-8 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday August 2, 2025, at the Cathedral of Christ the King, 714 King St W, Hamilton, at 10 a.m. A private cremation to follow.

The Ziliotto and Miszuk family were family friends for many years. John and my dad Larry played Junior hockey together and won the memorial cup in 1962. They’re such dear friends to me and my family that we call them uncle John and aunt Cora.
Uncle John will be deeply missed and forever remembered in our hearts.

Love Mark
