In Celebration of Maria Filice (née Spadafora)
January 7, 1938 - April 26, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Maria Filice, who passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on January 7, 1938, in Cosenza, Italy, Maria carried with her a deep appreciation for family, tradition, and the simple joys of life. She built a life rooted in love, resilience, and unwavering devotion to those closest to her. She moved from Italy to Canada in 1967 to begin a new chapter.
She was the cherished wife of Francesco for over 65 years, and a proud and loving mother to her sons, Peter (Nancy) and Carlo (Lesley). Her greatest joy was her family, and she took immense pride in her role as Nonna to Alyssa (and her fiancé Adam) and Kevin.
Maria was predeceased by her brothers and sisters Carmine (Erminia), Concetta (Francesco), Ida (Michele) and Giuseppe (Cecilia). She will be lovingly remembered by her sister-in-law Carmela (late Vincenzo), brother-in-law Santino and Cecilia in Canada and late sister-in-law Gina. Also in Italy survived by her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law the late Ignazio (Esterina), Ida (late Antonio), Giuseppe (late Elodia), and Eugenio (Emilia). Also lovingly remembered by her many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in Italy and Canada.
She will be fondly remembered as an exceptional cook and baker, whose kitchen was truly the heart of her home. She was known for her incredible cookies, lovingly prepared for weddings, showers, and baptisms, and for the way she expressed her love through food that brought comfort and joy. Maria also had a gift for bringing people together, hosting many gatherings where family and friends were always welcomed with warmth, laughter, and a table full of delicious dishes. These moments created lasting memories that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of sharing them. Her home was always open, her table always full, and her heart always generous. Her warm smile filled a room and made everyone feel instantly at home.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the incredible staff at Wentworth Heights for the care, compassion, and kindness they showed Maria. Your dedication and support brought comfort not only to her, but to our entire family, and will never be forgotten.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and enduring family bonds that will continue to guide us. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved her.
