In Celebration of

Sebastian Alvernia

June 18, 1951 -  May 1, 2023

It is with profound sadness the family of Sebastian Alvernia announce his passing on May 1, 2023 at the age of 72 at St. Peter's Hospital, Hamilton, Ontario. He will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 45 years Susie (née Capuano), his son Joshua, daughter-in-law Alexandra and precious grandson, Leo Sebastian. Also missing him will be his sisters Vita (Cosimo) Galletti, Maryangela (Jack) Cristiano, Rose Alvernia, Diane (Jay) Petty; mother-in-law Rosina Capuano; siblings-in-law Renata (Mike) Mattina and Michael (Assunta) Capuano. Nieces and nephews Philip, Gaetano (Marija), Mare (Todd), Celestina (Cameron), Jason (Eileen), Giovanni (Camilla), Hope, Leah (Kyle), Jacob (Olivia), Tiana (Jeff) and Isabella. Predeceased by his parents Gaetano and Gaetana Alvernia and father-in-law Tony Capuano. Fondly remembered and missed by his Lyngate Court family and friends.

Sebastian loved many things. He loved sports. He had his teams and was lucky enough to see the Leafs progress out of the first round just before he passed. But, even more than his teams, he always rooted for the underdog. He'd say it was more fun that way. He loved a good glass of Californian Cabernet Sauvignon. Maybe more than one glass. He loved a good midnight snack. You'd always catch him sneaking into the fridge in the wee hours of the morning to put together a carefully constructed plate of deep night deliciousness. He loved many things, but more than anything, he loved his family. He didn't just tell them how much he loved them; he showed them. Sebastian was the one you'd call in a bind. When you needed help moving, when you needed help with taxes (he was an investigator for the CRA for 35 years), and especially, when you just needed someone to talk to. You'd call him because he would just listen, he would just give, and he would never ask for anything in return. He had the rare quality of gentle and honest selflessness. He was the rock his family was built upon and will be dearly missed.

Special thanks to every dedicated caregiver who helped him through this difficult journey including Dr. Kara Schnarr, Dr. Bobby Shayegan, Dr Quan, Dr. Pierre Major, Dr. Andrea Csordas, Dr. Jordan La Franier, Dr. Nick Tompkins, Dr. Gupta, Nurse Marion, and Manny. The nursing staff at St. Peter's; Matthew Kettings, Ashley Mikitzel and Christina Dzieduszycki. A visitation will be held at 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. on May 9, 2023, at Bay Gardens, 947 Rymal Road East, Hamilton, ON L8W 3M2. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on May 10, 2023, at Bay Gardens, 947 Rymal Road East, Hamilton, ON L8W 3M2. Memorial donations may be made in Sebastian's name to either the Cancer Assistance Program or to St. Peter's Hospital at 88 Maplewood Ave, Hamilton, ON L8M 1W9.

My deepest sympathy to you, Susie and your family. I always admired Sebastians gracious smile and his determination and bravery to face his diagnosis. I'm sorry I am out of the country and unable to attend the services for him.
