Peacefully, surrounded by his family at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton, on May 5th, Alexander (Alex) Monaco entered into eternal rest at the age of 78. Reunited with his cherished son Nicholas, his father Nicola, mother Dora, sister Margherita, cousins Betty and Andrew, and all those that have departed before him. Alex leaves behind his daughter Alexandra, for whom he imparted daily wisdom as a loving father and protector. Grieving alongside are Alex’s brother-in-law Michael and nephews Joey and Paul (Gabe), his sister-in-law Liz (Larry), his niece Meaghan (Neil), their daughters Adrienne and Spencer, and his nephew Andrew (Cady). Forever in the hearts of cousins Cecile (Tony), Tina and Victor (Candace), Claudio, Melissa, Alex (Nathalie) and Veronica (Chris), Margherita (Ed) of the United States, as well as loving family members abroad. He will also be missed by the many lifelong friends that supported him including Stew and Georgina, Gina, Donna, Mimma, Gus and Vicki, Nick and Janet, and the entire ‘Viewmount Crew’, who made our neighbourhood a place he admired as he spent afternoons and evenings on the veranda.
Alex arrived in Canada with his parents in 1957, and as he grew up in Hamilton, he earned his place at Stelco Hilton Works, via the electronics program at Mohawk College. Alex went on to have a successful 40-year career at Stelco, retiring in 2006 as the Electrical Foreman in the Cold Mill Instruments and Electronics Shop. He was fond of his time spent working, and always kept his memories in the forefront by sharing a story or two, and little anecdotes along the way.
Alongside his work commitments and long into retirement, Alex was a proud and committed Winona Peach Festival volunteer for over 40 years. He cherished the many relationships he made while volunteering, and was happy to play a small role in bettering the community.
A sincere thank-you to the entire family health team and Dr. Jason Profetto at Profetto Savatteri Family Medicine for the wonderful care and compassion he received.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations in Alex’s honour to Juravinski Hospital or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
