On May 5, 2026, Alex Ritchie passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love.
Alex was the devoted and cherished husband of Mary (née McLerie) Ritchie, with whom he shared a marriage for 72 years, filled with love, respect, and companionship. He will be deeply missed by his loving children, Valerie (Dan) and Lorraine (Kevin); his treasured grandchildren, Alison (Brian), Danny (Heidi), Heather (JJ), Kyle (Kate), and Ashley (Robbie); and his ten adored great-grandchildren, with another precious great-grandchild expected on May 16. He will also be fondly remembered by his dear sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Irene and Ron.
Alex was predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Janet Ritchie (née Hutchison), and his brother, Dave.
As a young boy, Alex attended the Boys’ Brigade, whose motto was “Sure and Steadfast”—a principle he carried with him throughout his life. Born with a spirit of determination and kindness, he immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1955, where he built a happy and successful life while proudly carrying his Scottish roots with him. Whether in his values, his stories, or his unmistakable wit, that heritage remained a quiet but constant part of who he was.
He proudly served in the Toronto Fire Services for 38 years, with the last 8 years as Platoon Chief, a role he fulfilled with dedication, strength, and a deep sense of duty. Known for his quick wit and steady leadership, Alex led by example, earning the respect and admiration of all who worked alongside him.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Alex was a man of many interests, drawn to music, dancing, art, and the simple pleasure of creating and appreciating the world around him. Whether listening, making, or sharing, he brought a quiet passion to everything he did.
Above all, he was deeply loved by his family. His presence, his stories, his warmth, and his quick “Grandadisms” are woven into the lives of those who knew him best. He leaves behind not just memories, but a lasting sense of love, laughter, and a reminder to enjoy life’s small moments.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Online condolences may be shared at www.baygardens.ca.
