It is with much sadness and broken hearts that we announce the death of John Gordon White of Hamilton on Wednesday January 14, 2026 at Baywood's Place Long Term Care Home at the age of 87.
John was born in Dover Hill, New Brunswick on October 4, 1938 to the late Gordon and Ada White.
John is survived by his wife Cleta (Smith) of 68 years this February 15th.. Three daughters Marcia Thornton (Lloyd), Paula Gowan, Shelly Phillips (Mike). Six grandchildren Elisha Coughler (Chris), Savannah Borsos (Andrew), Benjamin Philllips, Melissa Gordon (Eric), Daniel Phillips (Ashley), Shantel Gailing (Nathan) and thirteen great-grandchildren.
John was preceded by his father, Gordon and mother Ada. Also, by his siblings Arthur (Helen). Helen (Clem), Dorothy (Neil), Margie (Austin), Mabel (Fred) and brother-in-law Wayne. John is survived by his sister Barb and many nieces and nephews.
John graduated from Southern Victoria Highschool in Andover, New Brunswick. He then went to New Brunswick Technical Institute in Moncton, New Brunswick where he completed a course to do Auto Body.
John decided to take his family and move to Hamilton in 1960.
He started working at the United Steel Company of Canada (Stelco 1005) where he was employed for 38 years. While he was there, he put an idea in the suggestion box to help them save lots of money. They liked his idea and implemented it.
John was a long-standing member of Lifepoint Church. He used his talents (Auto Body) and helped out by preparing six school buses and then painted them all blue for the bus ministry.
John decided to retire from Stelco after 38 years of being there. He bought a motorhome and decided to travel through Canada and the USA for 18 years. He preferred the warmer climate as to our cold winters here.
John was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends and even strangers. He would do anything to help anyone who needed it. He has many lifelong friends all over the world.
A BIG Special thank you goes out to all the thoughtful and supportive staff at Baywood's Place for the exceptional care of John for the last four years. They went above and beyond the expectations. They showed their love and appreciation by giving John an Honour Guard when he left. It was very touching and special to see how much they really cared. It meant a lot to the family.
He was loved by many and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
