Born February 3rd, 1964, in Chatham, New Brunswick, passed away peacefully in the loving company of his partner, David, on Friday, March 13 at Carpenter Hospice in Burlington after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Deeply cherished by his partner, David, children Emily (Mitchell) and Ben, and grandsons Lochlan and Callum. Lovingly remembered by his mother, Waltraut, and siblings Marita (Tim) and Matthew (Andrea); nieces Grace (Jacob), Olivia, and Claire; nephew Noah; former spouse and friend Janet; uncle and aunt, Gerhard and Hanna; extended aunts, uncles and cousins, and many dear friends who were chosen family. Predeceased by his beloved father, Arthur, with whom he is to be buried.
Markus is fondly remembered by his colleagues and friends across the City of Hamilton, where he worked for over thirty-six years. In his twenty years as a Senior Policy Analyst, Markus was a key contributor to projects like Hamilton Youth Advisory Committee, Living Wage Initiative, Menstrual Product Initiative and more as a steadfast advocate for diversity, equity, and belonging. An active community member, Markus sat on both Synod and church council as a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, now Trinity Lutheran.
Markus will be remembered for his warmth, good humour, creativity, sharp wit, and ability to source the best baked good in town. He loved to share his passion for travel, history, design, food, and science-fiction, gathering friends from all walks of life who will miss him deeply. He was a welcoming host, baking gorgeous birthday cakes for his grandsons or laying out a delicious dinner for loved ones. Markus enjoyed an incredibly full life after his diagnosis, travelling with David to the UK, Spain, France, Malta, and across Canada, and at home spending cherished time with their grandchildren, family, and friends.
Markus and family would like to extend their deep gratitude to the care teams at Brant Hospital, the McCain Clinic at Princess Margaret Hospital, Saint Elizabeth Health, PEARL study at Toronto General Hospital, and Carpenter Hospice, as well as Pastor Daniela Mertz and Pastor Jordan Smith.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bay Gardens Funeral Home at 1010 Botanical Drive, Burlington. Public visitation will be held from 5:00PM-8:00PM on Friday, March 27th. A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, March 28th at 1:00PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Rainbow Railroad or Barton 541 in Markus’ name.
