It is with heavy hearts and immense love that we announce the peaceful passing of Sam Klashoff, who left us on December 14, 2025, in his 93rd year. Born on October 8th, 1933, in Bouf, Macedonia, Sam’s life was defined by resilience, hard work, and an unwavering devotion to family and community. At just 15 years old, he immigrated alone to Toronto, Ontario, carrying with him determination, a deep connection to his heritage, and hope for the future. He began a new life in Canada with gratitude and purpose, and was deeply proud to call this country home. In 1959, Sam married his beloved Afroditi (Freda) and moved to Hamilton to build a life together and raise a family. A talented chef and entrepreneur, Sam spent his entire working life in the restaurant business in Toronto and Hamilton. For 25 years, he was the proud owner and operator of Forest Gate Restaurant in Hamilton, where his generosity and steady presence were felt by everyone who passed through its doors.
A devoted community-builder, Sam was a founding member of St. Naum Macedonian Orthodox Church in 1971 and remained deeply connected to his Macedonian community throughout his life. He never forgot his roots and took great pride in his heritage. Humble, good-natured, and widely respected, Sam greeted everyone with a smile and a handshake, always sharply dressed and known for his warmth and integrity. At family celebrations, he could often be found enjoying the music and joining in for a dance. After retiring in 2002, Sam continued to find joy in cooking delicious meals for his family, volunteering with his church, discussing politics and watching wrestling, socializing with his many family and friends, and spending time traveling and enjoying new experiences. He was a gifted storyteller and loved sharing stories with his grandchildren, who delighted in his memories, humour, and wisdom. He was happiest when surrounded by those he loved, all of whom he treasured deeply.
Sam was the beloved husband of Afroditi (Freda) for 66 years; cherished father of Helen (Alex) Gentili, Chris (Violet) Klashoff and Donna (Nick) Carnicelli; and a caring and devoted Dedo to Julia (Matthew), Anthony, Victoria (Vince), Adrian (Jessica), Aleksandar (Magdalena), Ashley, Monica (Adrian), Adam (Jessica), Erica, and Bianca. He was overjoyed to be a great-grandfather to Noella, Gabriel, Stellina, Alesso, Benino, and Carina. He is survived by his only sister, Ordana in Australia; predeceased by his parents George and Polexia Klashovski, step-parents Lazor and Petra Klashovski and brothers Vangel, Pavle and Alex. Sam will also be fondly remembered by many relatives and friends in Canada, Australia and Macedonia.
Heartfelt thanks are extended to Dr. Solomon and his team at St. Peter’s Hospital, and also to Dr. Chan and her team at Ridgeview Long-Term Care for their excellent service and compassion. The family also expresses tremendous thanks to Sam’s dedicated and caring PSWs Nida, Mercy, Raquel, Yamari and Del for their exceptional care, kindness and support.
Family and friends will be received at Bay Gardens Funeral Home (947 Rymal Rd. East, Hamilton) on Thursday, December 18th, between 3-5 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. A funeral service will take place at St. Naum Macedonian Orthodox Church (1150 Stone Church Rd. East, Hamilton) on Friday, December 19th at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Mount Hamilton Cemetery (260 Rymal Rd. East, Hamilton).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sam’s memory to St. Naum Macedonian Orthodox Church or to a charity of your choosing.
Sam’s legacy is one of perseverance, generosity, and quiet strength -a life rooted in family, faith, and community, and a man who will be deeply missed
