It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Edmund was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, the son of Michael and Viola Kodis and big brother to his sister Anne. Edmund, known to many as Ed, went to St. Ann’s Elementary School and Cathedral Boys High School. Ed was an Air Cadet and fresh out of school joined the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. He learned to fly on the De Havilland Tiger Moth and spent many hours at airfields, which led to his lifelong love of aviation.
In 1947, he met Florence Trewin, the real love of his life. Florence, who had moved to Hamilton from New Brunswick, captured his heart, and they ultimately wed in 1949. They recently celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary.
The family began to arrive shortly thereafter. He was a proud father to six children and their spouses, Charlotte Daniels (John), Sandra Hawkes (David), Theresa Bain (Tim), Mary Crockett (Peter), Edmund Kodis (Margery), Jennifer Kodis (Scott). He was a devoted grandfather to Brian (Hanna), Michael (Lindsay), Sarah (Darren), Steven (Randi), Stephanie, John (Gwen), Eddie (Sarah), Katherine (Ryan), Eddie (Miriam), Kevin, Friday (Ian), Sam, Marina and 14 treasured great grandchildren.
In 1950, Ed joined the Hamilton Police Service as a patrol officer and rose through the ranks as Detective, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant and Inspector. Through diverse specialist training and extensive experiences, Ed was skilled in many facets of policing. Ed retired as an Inspector after 36 years of honourable police service.
Once retired, Ed continued to serve his community. Ed was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 40 years, achieved Fourth Degree Knight status and became the Grand Knight for Council 5860 and District Deputy in Hamilton. With the Knights of Columbus, Ed helped organize community events and fundraise for local charities. Ed was a long-time member and past president of the Hamilton Police Retirees. He was active with their charitable work. He was instrumental in establishing the Hamilton Police Museum, helping community members understand the history of the Hamilton Police Service. He was one of the founding members of the Police Pensioners Association of Ontario.
In retirement, he also enjoyed golf and travel with Florence and countless hours with family.
Throughout his life, Ed was most proud of his family. He spent many happy hours with them. His skills were diverse, including babysitting, ‘taxiing’ children and grandchildren and attending sports games, recitals and school events. He will be fondly remembered for his grand skill of storytelling.
We will miss you, Ed. Rest in peace, and we’ve got your six.
Our family is indebted to the health teams at Winterberry Family Medicine, Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Extendicare Hamilton for helping to enhance his life.
