Peter was born in Toronto, to James Stuart and Frances Adelaide Mitchell, before moving to Hamilton in 1938. He is pre-deceased by 'big brothers' David and John.
Peter attended Westdale HS where his love of football began. He went on to play at McMaster University while completing his degree. Ultimately, he was drafted to the CFL by Ottawa RoughRiders but gave it up to attend Osgoode Hall Law School.
While studying Law in Toronto he met the love of his life, Beverley McLaren, on a blind date. They married in 1961 and raised four remarkable daughters, Catherine, Lynsey (Ed Sober), Sandy (Tanya Draker), and Laurie (Matt Crossley). They were beyond thrilled to welcome their grandchildren, Peter (Becky) Sober, John (Vicky) Sober, Michael Sober, Allyson Sober, Maryn Crossley and Desmond Crossley, who will undoubtably remember and prosper from the strength of their grandpa’s love and compassion.
Peter was actively involved in creating an enriched environment for family and community. He volunteered to many governing boards including the Royal Botanical Gardens, and the Hamilton Public Library. He was elected as a Hamilton School Board Trustee and served as Chairman of the Board. He was a founding member of Mountview Softball League.
He was appointed to the Ontario Provincial Court at age 39 where he presided as a judge for 35 years. He was well-respected by his peers and the legal community and worked hard to uphold the sanctity of the justice system in every aspect of his life.
He was an incredibly kind and respectful man: “forever the gentleman”. Although he will be sorely missed, his legacy will remain in the hearts and minds of many.
At the family’s request, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at Bay Gardens Funeral Home, 1010 Botanical Drive, Burlington, on Wednesday, October 15, 2025 at 3pm.
